Will I Start Dying Right Away?

Will I Start Dying Right Away?

Many years ago, when I was working as a volunteer in a hospital, I met a little girl named Lisa, who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance for recovery seemed to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the necessary antibodies to fight the illness.

The doctor explained the situation to her little brother and asked the boy if he would agree to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for just a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save her."

As the transfusion began, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, along with everyone else, seeing the color returning to her face. Then, his face turned pale, and his smile disappeared.

He looked at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start dying right away?"

Being so young, the boy had misunderstood the doctor when he was told about the transfusion. He thought he had to give all his blood to his sister to save her. And yet, he agreed!
